The public is invited to attend a presentation from BC Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie, on the importance of an effective and caring publicly funded home support program.

Mackenzie will provide an update on the current state of home care in the province, and there will be a chance to discuss why it is vital that our government provide a high standard of care to elders at home wherever possible.

What needs to be done?

· Provide home support to people whenever possible to enable them to live in their homes.

· Expand and improve upon the time and quality of caring, person-focused home care.

· Support family caregivers who provide most of the elder care to their loved ones.

· Expand and enhance day programs and respite for elders and caregivers.

Most older adults wish to remain as independent as possible in their homes, and the cost of care at home is less than in institutional residences. But is the B.C. government making plans to build upon and improve the current system of home care?

This can and should happen with input from those who are living this experience day to day.

This presentation is being co-hosted by Elders Take Action, Hornby & Denman Community Health Care Society, and Comox Valley Senior Support.

Elders Take Action is a local seniors’ group that organizes and leads discussions on issues of importance to seniors.

Hornby Denman Health provides programs that support the well-being of older Hornby & Denman islanders and runs the Comox Valley Better at Home Program, providing non-medical services that support aging at home.

Comox Valley Senior Support has been operating in the community since 1991. It supports older adults in the Comox Valley with programs such as Friendly Visiting, Seniors Information and Access, Caregiver Support groups.
