Lake Trail Neighbourhood Connections (LTNC) has received funding from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP), for the “Back to School for Seniors” pilot project, which runs until March 31, 2018.
The mission of LTNC is to contribute to a safe, healthy and sustainable neighbourhood that supports the success of students, families and community members by increasing the links between school and community. The Back to School for Seniors project furthers this mission by enhancing intergenerational experiences, and creating a skills-based, sustainable volunteer engagement program.
“Seniors are an amazing resource in the Comox Valley,” said LTNC treasurer, Sheila McDonnell. “We want to provide opportunities for seniors to share their skills and experiences with our students.”
There are many ways seniors (age 55 +) can be involved in the project. We are looking for seniors with experience volunteering and/or experience working within the schools to be a part of the advisory committee, which will guide the project through design and implementation of a volunteer program. We are also looking for seniors who are interested in sharing their skills/passions, and experiences with students, or those who would like to make a difference in their community through any of the programs offered by LTNC.
More information can be found by attending an information session on Sept. 11 at Lake Trail Middle School, 1–3 p.m., or by visiting the LTNC website at www.laketrailconnect.ca . For more info, contact the project coordinator, Shannon Pickering at volunteerltnc@gmail.com or by phone at 250-897-8474.
