The Campbell River, Courtenay and District Labour Council is inviting the community to celebrate union pride and solidarity at their Labour Day BBQ on Sept. 1.

"Labour Day is a time to feel some Union Pride and Community Solidarity especially in these troubling times," a release from the group says. "Labour Day was first celebrated by the Labour Movement back in 1872, but it didn’t officially become a statutory holiday until 1894. Now it marks the end of summer and time to head back to school. It is more than that though and with labour rights, women’s rights, gay rights and just plain human rights under threat by right wing politicians both here and in the US people in our communities need to band together both in organizing and in celebration. So join us on Labour Day!"

The old-fashioned, free family picnic will be at Merville Hall from noon until 3 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 1.

There will be a free BBQ with refreshments. There will be fun and games for the kids. Live music entertainment by Clive Quigley, will be provided for your enjoyment. Everyone is welcome.
