The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) recently reactivated the beach fire program.
Beach fires are permitted at Goose Spit Park from May 1 to Sept. 4 within the 10 designated fire rings located on the outer beach of the park. There is a limited amount of dry firewood on site. The burning of driftwood or other materials is not permitted.
There are also designated fireplace structures for use by the public at Joe Walker Park and Royston Seaside Park. Joe Walker Park also has two beach fire rings: one at the picnic area and one at the north end of the park. Fires and cooking activities are permitted year-round at the designated fireplace structures.
“After a few years of being apart, promoting togetherness in our natural areas is important,” explains Richard Hardy, CVRD Electoral Area B director and chair of the electoral area service committee. “We hope residents enjoy this program being back in the community and have the chance to visit one of our beautiful parks.”
The fire ring program is not affected by the ̨MM Fire Centre’s open fire prohibition, set to begin at noon on May 18.
That ban is for Category 2 and 3 open fires (i.e. backyard pile burns) and Category 3 (large burns, including windrows up to 200m in length).
The beach fire program lands under Category 1 (campfires).
Should a Category 1 ban be announced, the beach fire program would be suspended.
Important Program Reminders:
• All beach fires need to be contained within a designated fire ring provided by the CVRD
• All beach fires need to be fully extinguished by park closing at 11 p.m.
• A bucket of water containing at least 10 litres is kept beside the fire at all times
• Only dry and untreated wood is to be used in the fire rings
• No driftwood, treated wood, plastics, garbage and any material other than dry and untreated wood, should be burnt
