Students at Robb Road School and École Au-coeur de l'île are currently taking part in À go, à vélo – Bike to School Week, a celebration of active and sustainable transportation happening this week across the Comox Valley.
In preparation for the event, both schools quietly tracked student travel habits during the previous week to establish a baseline. This data is now helping measure the impact and success of Bike to School Week as students, families, and staff make the shift toward cycling, walking, and other active modes of commuting. Both schools have encouraged families to start walking or riding school buses.
“We wanted to understand where we were starting from, so we could celebrate the progress our students make this week,” said Dominique McGrady, school organizer. “It’s been amazing to see the increase in bikes, scooters, and walkers at the school each day.”
Throughout the week, students are encouraged to choose active transportation and take part in fun activities, celebration stations, and daily tracking. They have many prizes with donations from Comox Bikes, Blacks Cycle, Dodge City Cycles, Aquatic Centre, Blue Toque, Beaufort Cycles, Mountain City Cycles and Trail Bikes. The goal is to promote healthy habits, reduce car traffic around schools, and show that getting to school can be fun, safe, and sustainable. One of the two schools will be the proud recipient of 'La roue d'or', the Golden Wheel Award.
This initiative supports broader community and provincial efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and foster healthier, more connected neighbourhoods.
