Since 2000, LUSH Valley has been working to support community well being in the Comox Valley through nourishing, local food. Over the past 25 years, the charity has grown from a small grassroots group of community volunteers to a 20+ person team touching the lives of nearly 5,000 people in the community each month.
While celebrating this milestone birthday and incredible growth, the organization continues to grapple with higher-than-ever rates of food insecurity and massive barriers for local farmers and growers. The need for LUSH鈥檚 programs is greater than ever. Hundreds of households in the Comox Valley are unable to meet their food needs: LUSH Valley鈥檚 wait list for low- or no-cost Good Food Boxes continues to grow, and some Hot Meal program partners have had to put their participation on hold due to lack of funding.
Just eight years ago, LUSH Valley was 85 per cent grant-funded. In 2025, the organization anticipates that grants will make up only 20-25 per cent of their funding. Given the current economic climate and increased costs, the charity is needing to diversify revenue streams and call on community support more than ever.
There are many ways to help LUSH continue Sharing the Harvest for another 25 years 鈥� take your pick! Rally your staff to raise funds as a team, host a community-led fundraiser, or donate a portion of sales from a certain item. Become a business sponsor, or collect donations at the till in a donation box or through your point-of-sale.
Comox Valley organizations are already making a difference. Big Wheel Burger鈥檚 recently opened Courtenay location has committed to donating $2 from the sale of every monthly special burger to LUSH Valley. Additionally, local entrepreneur Grant Powers of Coastwood Private Wealth has pledged to match every donation made during May and June, up to a total of $5,000.
Gifts of over $1,000 are thanked with special perks, which includes recognition on LUSH Valley鈥檚 social media, website and annual report, and those who give $3,000+ receive tickets to LUSH events and a special annual dinner.
