The official opening of the L’Arche Comox Valley I Belong Centre takes place Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m.
The centre, at 1465 Grieve Avenue in Courtenay, is an 8,500 square foot facility, offering a wide range of educational and recreational activities for the community. It has studios for arts and crafts, rooms for theatre, music and dance, a teaching kitchen, a lounge for hanging out and six apartments for adults with developmental disabilities who are able to live semi-independent lives.
A ribbon-cutting and celebration to mark the official opening of the I Belong Centre attended by the national president of L’Arche Canada, Ms. Hollee Card, the mayors of Courtenay, Cumberland, and Comox, representatives of the federal and provincial governments, the bishops of the Roman Catholic and Anglican dioceses of Vancouver Island, the chair and co-chairs of the I Belong Campaign and citizens of the Comox Valley. Following the ceremony, there will be tours of the facility, an exposition of many of the activities the centre will sponsor and an opportunity for hands-on art.
The $1.9 million project was funded principally by local individuals, businesses and associations, along with a contribution of $250,000 from the Government of British Columbia and $40,000 from the City of Courtenay. ̨ÍåMMÂãÁÄÊÒ Community Credit Union holds a mortgage on the facility for $850,000.
Open to the whole community, the I Belong Centre is a place where those with different abilities can mix and mingle, enhance their skills, enjoy being active and creative and make new friends.
