Tom Carter, who guides fellow adventurers through the ancient markets of Nepal and to legendary Kathmandu, will be the guest speaker for the season’s first meeting of the North Island Rhododendron Society (NIRS), Tuesday, Sept. 11.
Rhododendrons are native to many places, but can be found in greatest abundance in the high reaches of the Himalayas and across Southeast Asia. It also happens to be Nepal’s national flower.
As a young man, Carter dreamt of “climbing high,” an ambition that led him to trek from village to village in the Himalayan Mountains meeting and making friendships with local people. He now incorporates these friends into the small, custom-designed groups he organizes with Moon Mountain Adventures, a company that allows trekkers to have the best kind of interaction with local Nepalese.
For his NIR presentation, Carter will give a taste of what others who also dreamed of exotic adventures experienced through slides and an abundance of first-hand experience in Nepal.
NIRS meetings are always held the second Tuesday of the month at the Comox United Church (250 Beach Avenue) with doors opening at 7 p.m. and the meeting starting at 7:30. Guests interested in NIRS membership are welcome to attend.
