WeCan Shelter Society's 14th home opens on June 22.

WeCan Shelter Society is pleased to announce the Grand Opening of Home #14 on Sunday, June 22 at 11 a.m. at Maple Pool Campground in Courtenay.

WeCan Shelter Society provides homes for the unhoused by converting shipping containers/sea cans into safe, modern and welcome environments.

The Grand Opening now marks the 14th home that WeCan has constructed with donations from the community including local construction suppliers, businesses, community groups, private individuals, and volunteers. WeCan accepts no government funding and relies on donations from people who feel that everyone is entitled to a safe, warm, dry place to call home.

WeCan Shelter Society started as a local Rotary initiative and has now grown to one of the Comox Valley’s most viable alternative housing arrangements for the marginalized. WeCan Board Member Sue Finneron says WeCan has run out of land at Maple Pool Campground and is now looking for land to start its own container community.editor

“The community supports what we’re doing wholeheartedly and wants us to continue our mission. That requires us to find new property to expand our cause,” said Finneron.

The WeCan homes cost $30,000 to build a 20’ x 8’ residence that includes a shower, toilet, sink, mini fridge and built-in bed. A small water tank heats the home, and a (dimensions) deck provides additional space for the resident.
