This summer the Comox Valley Art Gallery is inviting the community to get creative and engage with important conversations through its Make Art Series.
The free program includes drop-in Make Art Projects for all ages every Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the CVAG plaza, at the corner of Duncan and 6th Street in Downtown Courtenay. The Make Art Projects are guided by CVAG summer interns.
Sessions will include puppet making, wire sculpture, and zine-making. Materials are provided and facilitators are on hand to support participants of all skill levels and experiences. Visit the CVAG Facebook page or website at for the full schedule.
The series also includes self-guided drop-in Make Stations available every day the Gallery is open, Wednesday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. A trolley filled with art materials and making tools is on-hand for unstructured creativity.
In addition to the regular Make Art Projects on Fridays, there will also be special Make Art activities from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. during the “Pulse of Plaza” street parties on July 25 and Aug. 22. Attendees are invited to add to a large mixed media artwork that will be on-site.
The Make Art Series offers accessible art-making experiences for people of all ages and abilities. This year the programming is running in conjunction with because • not despite, an exhibition that centres disabled and neurodivergent voices.
The exhibition features the work of artists Persimmon Blackbridge, Taryn Goodwin, and members of L’Arche Comox Valley, bringing together sculpture, mixed media, video, and accumulating installation that challenge societal assumptions about disability.
“Together, we have adopted new accessibility practices, disrupted prevailing standards of presentation, honoured what is possible, and made room for new forms of expression to erupt,” says CVAG Curator Denise Lawson.
