New exhibitions that confront perceptions of disability open Saturday, June 14, 1 p.m., at the Comox Valley Art Gallery.
The opening event will include artist talks, a reception, and cake to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the official opening of CVAG’s current location.
“Because / Not Despite” is a convergent program that features exhibitions by Persimmon Blackbridge, Taryn Goodwin, and artists from L’Arche Comox Valley.
Blackridge’s exhibition “Emma Goldman at the Frick Museum” tells the story of the flamboyant anarchist and feminist Emma Goldman and her adventures in the 1890s. It is also a critique of Trump’s America and an homage to the many strands of resistance in our world today.
Goodwin’s “The Shape of Care” is an accumulating exhibition with an ongoing investment in access-driven, community-focused social commentary, experiential research, relational exercises and social interventions.
“Art of Belonging” exhibits work by artists who have been creating together every winter for the past 10 years. This program enables the spirit of community and shows the creativity that exists in every person with and without diverse abilities.
The opening event falls on the 20-year anniversary of the official opening of the Comox Valley Centre for the Arts, the building which houses CVAG and other cultural organizations. The building was the former Courtenay Fire Hall, and was converted into an art gallery and office spaces after extensive renovations.
The event is free of charge, and everyone is welcome to attend. It will be ASL facilitated. Recordings on portable headsets will describe the installations and the text components.
“Because / Not Despite” will run until Sept. 6. CVAG is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
