Christiane and George Smyth, owners of the Salish Weave collection, visited École Puntledge Park Thursday to learn more about the Aboriginal Education Program in the Kindergarten-Grade 1 class of Ms. Colleen Devlin.
The Smyths have used the collection to raise awareness of Coast Salish art by participating in exhibitions, loaning and donating artworks to institutions such as museums, galleries, universities and schools.
Their collection of First Nation Salish artwork, titled Salish Weave, is renowned in the art world. Among the collection is artwork by local artist Andy Everson. Visit to view the virtual gallery. Salish Weave counts 57 three-dimensional works, 31 paintings and 207 serigraphs, some of them in multiple copies, for a total of 2,084 pieces.
Eighteen pieces of the collection have been donated to the Comox Valley between School District 71 and école Au-cœur-de-l’île.
SD71 will unveil the collection of art donated by the Smyths later in the spring.
