Police have revealed that human remains discovered approximately 10 km from Kugluktuk, Nunavut, on July 15 belong to an 11-year-old boy who was reported missing on Aug. 1, 2024.
The RCMP said the boy's identification was confirmed in collaboration with the Nunavut Coroner's Office and the family of the deceased.
Last summer, an extensive community search for Jonas Klengenberg was called off on Aug. 9, after more than a week of efforts. His great-aunt, Helen Klengenberg, told CBC News that members of the family believed that the boy may have drowned.
The remains were found last month in the area of 4 Mile Bay.
The coroner's office investigates all sudden, unnatural, unexpected, unattended and unexplained deaths in the territory and try to come up with a cause of death.
