Sooke residents may see smoke in the sky as a fire burns on an island in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Sooke residents may see smoke in the sky this week, but need not be alarmed.

The District of Sooke is advising residents and visitors that a wildfire is active on Secretary Island, a small island in the Strait of Juan de Fuca near Sooke.

Due to the ongoing wildfire, smoke may drift into Sooke and surrounding areas depending on weather conditions.

On B.C.’s Wildfire Service site, the fire is currently classified as out of control and is said to be covering 0.6 hectares, but no area restrictions are in place.

No evacuations are necessary, and two initial attack crews are currently responding to the fire.

Wildfire smoke can pose health risks, especially for people with pre-existing heart and lung conditions, the elderly, infants and young children. Symptoms of smoke exposure may include eye irritation, sore throat, coughing, headaches or difficulty breathing.

To reduce health risks, residents and visitors are advised to stay indoors with windows and doors closed, use a portable air cleaner or HVAC system to recirculate air, reduce or reschedule outdoor activities, and check in on family, friends and neighbours who may be more vulnerable.

Currently, air quality in the area is classified as low risk by the Air Quality Health Index.
