The next set of water restrictions for the Comox Valley are scheduled to come into effect on July 1.

The next set of water restrictions for the Comox Valley are scheduled to come into effect on July 1.

Stage two restrictions will come into effect next month, affecting Black Creek-Oyster Bay, Comox Valley, and Union Bay Water Systems. This includes residents in the City of Courtenay, Town of Comox, and all three electoral areas (A, B and C).

Under stage two lawn and garden sprinkling is permitted between the hours of 6:00 a.m. – 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Saturday for even numbered addresses, and Wednesday and Sunday for odd numbered addresses. This is a reduction from last year, after the regional district board approved a 25 per cent reduction to these watering times to help reduce overall water consumption through the summer.

“There are growing concerns regarding water use in the Comox Valley and residents not following the water restrictions put in place," said Kris La Rose, Senior Manager of Water and Wastewater Services, CVRD. "We all need to do our part in managing the Comox Valley water resources. Reducing our water consumption lowers our impact on the natural environment and helps keep infrastructure costs down for the community.”

"Stage two watering restrictions are necessary to help conserve water and ensure our systems can handle peak summer demand," said Rodney Armstrong, Manager of Utilities, City of Courtenay. "By following the updated schedule, residents can help protect our water supply and maintain essential services like drinking water and fire protection."

The regional district and City of Courtenay will also be patrolling areas and issuing warnings and then fines this summer. Fines start at $100 and are subject to the applicable water conservation and ticketing bylaws. CVRD Bylaw is also responsible for water enforcement in the Town of Comox.

“We appreciate the continued efforts of the community to conserve water during the summer months," said Craig Perry, engineering manager for the Town of Comox. "Even small changes- like hand watering rather than sprinkling gardens and plants- can make a meaningful difference. Conserving water today helps ensure a reliable supply as we prepare for the hotter, drier season ahead.”

Watering times for the Black Creek-Oyster Bay and Union Bay Water Systems will remain the same from 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. on the designated days.
