Victoria police are commending a 12-year-old tourist from Denmark after she reported what appeared to be a firearm in Victoria鈥檚 Inner Harbour.
The girl, named Wela, spotted the object in the water and quickly alerted authorities. Officers responded and confirmed the item was an air gun designed to look like a real firearm.
鈥淎lthough not illegal, officers regularly encounter air gun replicas, which pose serious safety risks,鈥� VicPD said in a statement. 鈥淲e commend Wela for recognizing a potential safety concern and doing the right thing.鈥�
Police said more than 80 real and replica firearms were seized in 2024 during calls for service.
