Victoria police are commending a 12-year-old tourist from Denmark after she reported what appeared to be a firearm in Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

The girl, named Wela, spotted the object in the water and quickly alerted authorities. Officers responded and confirmed the item was an air gun designed to look like a real firearm.

“Although not illegal, officers regularly encounter air gun replicas, which pose serious safety risks,” VicPD said in a statement. “We commend Wela for recognizing a potential safety concern and doing the right thing.”

Police said more than 80 real and replica firearms were seized in 2024 during calls for service.
