Trails in the Puntledge River area are getting an improvement this spring, with crews on site beginning in June.
BC Hydro will be undertaking the improvements on both sides of the river starting on June 9. The work will include resurfacing trails and replacing aging bridges, culverts, and boardwalks, extending the life of the trails and making them safer.
"We know this trail system is important and we are making every effort to keep as many trails open as possible during construction," a release from BC Hydro says. "However, to ensure public and crew safety some sections will be temporarily closed for the duration of construction."
A large portion of River Trail East will be closed from June 9 until Oct. 31 for construction. This includes Palm Beach trail between Bevan Trail and Palm Beach. Bevan trail will remain open from Palm Beach Trail to Comox Dam to maintain the connection for the trail system. Also, the northwest portion of River Trail West and Bear Bate Trail will be closed for the duration of construction. There will be no access between Forbidden Plateau Road and Comox Dam during construction.
"We recognize that this is a popular time for trail use; however, completing this work during the drier months minimizes further trail degradation from construction equipment," the release says. "We are asking trail users to please be cautious, remain alert to construction activities and obey personnel and barriers in place. Maps will be posted at trailheads to illustrate the temporary trail closures and detours."
This is part of a multi-year project, which will include improvements on the west side of the trail beginning in April, 2026.
