Are you interested in gaining insight into the creative writing process?
Author Michelle Barker will conduct a visual presentation and will read from her novel, The House of One Thousand Eyes, at the Comox Library on July 31 from 2 to 3 p.m. She will talk about how she came to write the novel while in Berlin doing research for another novel. There will be lots of time for Q&A following her presentation.
The House of One Thousand Eyes takes place in East Germany in the 1980s and is about a teenager, Lena, who goes in search of her missing uncle. After the death of her parents in a factory explosion and time spent in a psychiatric hospital recovering from the trauma, she is sent to live with her stern aunt, a devoted member of the ruling Communist Party. When her uncle goes missing, Lena is determined to find him.
The House of One Thousand Eyes was the name given by Berliners to the Stasi headquarters, home of East Germany’s most important and most feared officials: the secret police.
Michelle Barker is currently visiting the Comox Valley as the McLoughlin Gardens Writer-in-Residence. She is an award-winning author, senior editor with The Darling Axe, and an editor with Mindstir Media.
Her novel The House of One Thousand Eyes (Annick Press) won numerous awards, including the Amy Mathers Teen Book Award, and was named a Kirkus Best Book of the Year.
