IN ADDITION TO seriously damaging a home

A large fire that engulfed a home and car near the intersection of Topland Road and Vanier Drive early Thursday morning had firefighters busy throughout the night.Kurt MacDonald, Courtenay deputy fire chief, said the fire — which began around 3 a.m. — caused significant damage to the home, which was occupied at the time."When when we arrived on scene, all four occupants were out of the home. The structure was heavily involved in fire. The crews worked for the better part of four hours to get the fire under control and at this time the fire is under investigation," he noted. "It was a difficult fire to get under control due to the age of the house and construction." MacDonald added the Courtenay Fire Department is working with RCMP to determine the cause of the fire.He said the residents were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital for examination as a precaution.photos@comoxvalleyrecord.com
