Sidney/North Saanich RCMP has arrested a man after fleeing police on July 16.

A man is facing multiple charges after eluding police through Sidney and into Central Saanich on July 16.

The incident began at approximately 10:04 a.m. when Sidney/North Saanich RCMP received a report of a man allegedly smoking from a bong while in the driver's seat of a vehicle parked at a local business.

Upon locating the vehicle, RCMP officers initiated a traffic stop. However, the situation quickly escalated when the driver allegedly reversed his vehicle rapidly, colliding with the police cruiser.

As additional officers attempted to prevent the vehicle's escape, the suspect reportedly hit the police vehicle again before speeding away.

A multi-agency search was immediately launched, with neighbouring police departments assisting in the incident.

Around 11 a.m., officers from the Saanich Police Department located the vehicle in the Willis Point area.

Saanich police successfully apprehended the driver after he attempted to evade a roadblock established by officers.

The 30-year-old driver was taken into custody without further incident.

RCMP are recommending criminal charges for approval, including two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, one count of flight from a police officer and another for taking a motor vehicle without consent.

The investigation is ongoing and Sidney/North Saanich RCMP is appealing to the public for any information related to the incident.

Anyone who may have witnessed the events or has any relevant information is urged to contact the Sidney/North Saanich RCMP at 250-656-3931.
