The Comox Valley Regional District will be moving on to the next phase of its sewer conveyance project, but that doesn't mean traffic disruptions on Comox Road are over.
The next phase of construction also requires a traffic pattern change on the road. Beginning on Monday, May 12, the one-way section of Comox Road will move to Comox Hill. This phase is expected to last until September.
"The traffic pattern change is being implemented for the construction of the new sewer forcemain pipe. The one-way traffic pattern is required as the width of Comox Hill is not possible to safely accommodate two lanes of traffic and the required construction," a release from the regional district says.
The section of Comox Road which is currently closed will re-open to traffic mid-morning on May 12, 2025. Vehicle traffic crossing the 17th Street Bridge will be able to turn right onto Comox Road. Two way-traffic will be possible, but only up to the construction zone. A U-turn route has been identified for traffic to turn around safely.
Traffic light timing at the 17th Street Bridge will continue to be timed to two-way traffic for the duration of road closures on Comox Road. Traffic travelling east on Comox Road/Highway 19A will be unable to continue through the intersection. This is required to ensure that traffic continues to flow along the approved detour route as per the traffic management plan.
The approved detour route continues to be up Ryan Road, followed by Lerwick into Guthrie to get to Comox. The Back Road route is not recommended, as turning right at Comox Road will not be possible, as traffic will be one-way going towards Courtenay at at that point.
From August 1-4, all construction will stop, and two-way traffic will resume. This will allow people to attend the Nautical Days and Filberg Festivals. After the long weekend, traffic will return to one-way until the project is complete.
From May 12 until June 3, traffic on Comox Hill will be one-way 24 hours per day, seven days a week, moving west from the Town of Comox towards the City of Courtenay. From June 3 until early July traffic on Comox Hill will be one-way 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., moving west from the Town of Comox toward the City of Courtenay (Monday-Friday). Overnight, after 8 p.m. the workzone will be closed to all traffic, pedestrians and bicycles. On weekends, the traffic will be one-way, 24 hours per day. From an estimated early-July date until September, the traffic will return to one-way, 24 hours per day, seven days per week moving west from Comox to Courtenay.
For people riding bikes and pedestrians, there will be two-way traffic through the zone 24 hours per day, seven days per week until June 3. From June 3 until early July, during the day, 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., Monday – Friday, two-way bike and pedestrian traffic will be possible through the construction zone. However, no bike or pedestrian traffic will be possible through the construction zone at night, 8:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.. On Saturdays and Sundays, two-way bike and pedestrian traffic will be 24 hours per day. Two-way bike and pedestrian traffic will resume in early July and will continue until September.
Construction is subject to suitable weather conditions or other possible construction-related delays. We apologize if timelines shift. The best way to stay up-to-date on the project is to sign up for email updates on the project .
