The Oyster River Recycling Depot is now owned by CSWM

Comox Strathcona Waste Management will be looking at expanding and improving services at the Oyster River Recycling Depot.

CSWM has now acquired the property, which has been in use since the 1970s, and will continue to ensure "the facility remains a community asset and will continue to serve residents of Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD), Strathcona Regional District (SRD) and South Campbell River for years to come."

“The Oyster River Recycling Depot collects over 500 tonnes of recycling annually, and is one of the most frequented depots in the CSWM service.” said John Rice, SRD Director of Electoral Area D (Oyster Bay - Buttle Lake). “Now that we have purchased this property and building, we can plan to make improvements to the resident experience and explore potential expansion opportunities.”

The purchase is funded through the CSWM service, and was included in its approved financial plan. Future planned improvements include upgrades to the building, expanded diversion services and additional parking to better serve the community. There are also plans to add recycling services for items like glass, foam and flexible plastic packaging.

The Oyster River Recycling Depot location has been part of the community since 1976, when it was constructed as a fire hall. It is a well-used and well-loved asset in the community. The introduction of recycling opportunities in 2002 at this location has demonstrated it is essential to serving the needs of approximately 12,000 area residents, as well as commuters who travel between Campbell River and Courtenay daily.

“This property has provided important services for many decades, and the CSWM Board is excited to provide this as a recycling service for future generations to benefit from.” said Edwin Grieve, CVRD Director of Electoral Area C (Puntledge Black Creek).
