A Freeman of the Village of Cumberland and Citizen of the Year — died Friday at the age of 90.Andrew (Red) Harvie also served several terms on Cumberland council and represented the village at the regional district level. "I sat with him on council when we were both aldermen from the late-'80s to the early-'90s," Dave Stevens said Tuesday.Harvie was born April 15, 1921 in Scotland. He and his family emigrated to Cumberland when he was a boy.Harvie was known in the community as a baseball umpire and basketball referee. "He actually devoted his life to the village," Stevens said. Harvie was married 67 years to Dorothy, who cared for him until the end. They have three adult children, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The service is this Saturday at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Courtenay off Ryan Road.A celebration of Red's life will be held at 1 p.m. at the CRI in Cumberland. reporter@comoxvalleyrecord.com
