Cumberland Council adopted Monday the 2011 property tax rate bylaw that calls for an approximate 3.8 per cent tax increase, about 4.2 per cent less than last year.

Council approved a six-month extension to an amendment bylaw for the Cumberland Green development, which proposes an all-inclusive retirement community on the outskirts of the Village. Bell Group is the agent for the owner of the property on Bevan Road. Bylaws — which received third reading in December 2009 — relate to land use matters.
Fourth reading is contingent upon several factors such as a regional sewage plan and water supply strategy. Coun. Kate Greening opposed the extension.

The United Riders of Cumberland Association, in an effort to promote the Comox Valley as a tourist destination, plans to develop an economic impact study. The non-profit group consists of about 200 members, both mountain bike racers and recreational enthusiasts. It donates regularly to community groups. On Monday, the group announced a $400 donation to the No. 6 Mine Park.

Project Childsign Comox Valley raises awareness of children's issues through community programs. The project hopes to post child-friendly signs at the eye level of preschool children — 3.5 to four feet — on municipal buildings. Project proponents asked council if the public works department could erect the signs.
