The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) has been recognized by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) as a winner of the 2024 FCM Sustainable Communities Awards.
The award is in the Climate Adaptation category and recognizes the important work being done with the .
鈥淭his award represents a nature-based solution to protect the coastline from erosion and flood risk, and includes the establishment of a new tidal channel and viewing boardwalk, improvements to park amenities, removal of invasive species, and the protection of archaeologically sensitive areas,鈥� explains Robyn Holme, manager of long range planning and sustainability.

The achievement will be celebrated at FCM鈥檚 2025 Sustainable Communities Conference on Feb. 11, in Fredericton, N.B. The CVRD will not be accepting the award in person; a member from FCM will accept the award on their behalf.
Park improvements and estuary channel work have been ongoing and will continue into the spring. A formal event will take place when the work is complete and open to the public, which is expected to be later in 2025.
This project is supported by previous work done through the Phase 1 and 2, which recommends nature-based approaches to shoreline management to build coastal resiliency, address sea level rise adaptation, and remove invasive species to improve habitat restoration.
