Spring has sprung in the Valley - local farmers and some industrious backyard gardeners have already been outside for weeks, preparing the soil for the abundance of local food to come.

For those whose desire to dig in the dirt is just beginning to bloom, this is the perfect time to seek out the knowledge, resources, and community support needed to start growing your food. Growing your food is a fun, rewarding practice that helps connect you with the land and strengthens the local food system.

Imagine the satisfaction of picking fresh veggies from your garden while also saving money on your grocery bills and reducing your carbon footprint. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, try just one crop – maybe you love peas, are always running out of cilantro, or your family uses a lot of salad greens. To get started, visit a seed library at LUSH Valley or the Comox Valley Library, where you can access seeds at no cost.

Alternatively, consider purchasing seeds from local farmers that have been pre-tested to do well in our unique climate. Many farmers sell their seed in the spring at the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market. LUSH Valley also offers a variety of workshops to help you embark on your gardening journey, on topics such as seed-starting, drought-resilient gardening, crop planning, beekeeping, canning and more.

If a lack of growing space is holding you back, there are several allotment garden plots available at LUSH Valley’s Share the Harvest Community Garden, located in downtown Courtenay. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting, this is a great opportunity to cultivate your little patch of green. Four new accessible garden beds are also available for those with mobility issues.

LUSH Valley also welcomes volunteer gardeners at weekly work parties, no commitment or experience required. Come help maintain the gardens, learn gardening tips, and enjoy the company of fellow gardeners.

To meet like-minded folks with an incredible depth of knowledge, join the Grow Food Everywhere Comox Valley Facebook group. This vibrant community is filled with discussions about food-growing, resources and inspiration. Connect with your community and let’s grow together.
