Two people were taken to hospital after a crash caused by a wrong-way driver on Highway 1 in Saanich late Thursday (May 1) night.

A driver going the wrong way resulted in a multi-vehicle crash that left two drivers hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, Saanich police told the Saanich News.

The driver of the vehicle travelling the wrong way sustained significant injuries and is currently in hospital, said Damian Kowalewich, Inspector of Professional Standards Division.

"The investigation continues, and our Traffic Safety Unit and Collision Analysts continue to determine why, and how this happened. We extend our gratitude to Saanich fire and BC Ambulance for their prompt and professional care provided to everyone at the scene,"  Kowalewich said.

The southbound lanes of the highway remained closed between Helmcken and Admirals roads until around 6 the next morning.
