Greater Victoria takes centre stage as host of the annual conference that brings together film industry professionals from across North America.
Industry executives descend on the region for ShowCanada 2025, produced by the Movie Theatre Association of Canada, from May 27 to 29.
During the conference, delegates from film exhibition and distribution gather to network, screen movies and upcoming products, attend seminars and celebrate movie-going.
The event changes cities each year and although B.C. has been a popular destination for the conference – Kelowna hosted in 2019 and Vancouver in 2023 – ShowCanada has not been in Victoria since 2006.
“Our delegates look forward to experiencing different parts of Canada each year and our American delegates get particularly excited as we often bring them to locations they don’t normally visit,” association executive director Nuria Bronfman said in a news release. “Victoria has been a city our delegates have wanted to return to for some time. B.C. is a popular province for us with a significant number of independent theatres, a thriving film community and proximity to L.A.”
This year’s schedule includes an opening night dinner celebration with performances by Ballet Victoria and Cascadia Strings as well as a closing evening at Church & State Winery and a dinner featuring local flavours and several B.C. brands including Better Acres Ice Cream, Hardbite chips, Salt Spring Island Cheese, Salt Spring Kitchen Company and Westholme Tea.
“We’ve had incredible local support from both the province and the City of Victoria and look forward to our delegates experiencing this beautiful destination,” Bronfman said.
During the event, Royal Theatre in Trail will receive the 2025 Independent Theatre Spotlight, and the Rob Stewart Sustainability Award will be presented to Eleanor Stacey, from the Nelson Civic Theatre Society.
Three local filmmakers will present their coming projects as part of the ShowCanada opening night dinner and awards presentation, including Lucid (Deanna Milligan, Ramsey Fendall, Emanuel Foucault); Mongrels (Jerome Yoo, Nach Dudsdeemaytha, Tesh Guttikonda); and Saints & Warriors (Patrick Shannon, Michael Grand).
Regular features of the annual conference return, including studio presentations, an awards celebration honouring the best in theatre management, a tradeshow and a “state of the industry” panel.
