January 19, 1930- February 26, 2017
Catharina, age 87 passed away peacefully on Feb. 26, 2017 surrounded by family after a 6 month struggle with cancer and a recent stroke. Born in the Netherlands, the eldest of 9 children of Johannes and Pietronella (Broers) Oomen. In 1955, she married Cornelius “Casey” Marinus and immigrated to Canada. They first settled on the Back Rd. Her sister Corry and her husband, Martin joined them in the Comox Valley in 1958. In 1960, they bought their own farm on Minto Rd. where they raised their children.
They lived there until 1991 and moved to 20th St. after retiring from the dairy farm. In 1997, she was grateful to have survived a life threatening brain aneurysm. Sadly, her husband passed away a year later after lengthy illness. She was devoted to her family and her faith. Being an active member of Christ the King Parish was very important to her. She was also a 60 year member of the Catholic Women’s League. She was proud of her 9 children and instilled in them the importance of hard work and honesty. She enjoyed music and singing and knitting and crocheting. Playing her favorite games of crib and Rummikub were also a great delight to her.
She is predeceased by her parents, one brother and one sister, her husband Casey and a grandson Daniel Thomas (John & Peggy).
She is survived by her children Hub (Shawnette), Marie (Simon) Gonzalez, John (Peggy), Joe (Margery), Ella (Allan) Borzel, Andrew (Brenda), Walter (Loreen), Kenny (Shelley) and Cathy (John), 18 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, her 6 siblings (Jo, Corry, Ad, Kees, Andre and Anny) and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Lamykina, and the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Oceanview for the wonderful care our Mother received while there. A special thanks to Teresa and Terry Penney for their help and friendship over the years. She had many friends and will be missed by all that knew her.
Funeral will be held at Christ the King Parish on Saturday, March 4th at 10:30am. A visitation will be held at Piercy’s Mt. Washington Funeral Home on Friday, March 3 From 7:000 PM - 9:00 PM
