After a long courageous battle with cancer and kidney failure, Ken peacefully passed away with is family by his side. He was a quiet man known for his smile and tenacious fight.
Ken was predeceased by his daughter Michelle, parents Grant and Jean, and brother Robert. He is survived by and will be missed tremendously by his son Jordan (Alexis), brother Gary (Theresa), sister Kate Shapter (Mike), nephew Samson, nieces Melissa, Stephanie and Nora, great-niece Alexandria, extended family and dear friends.
Ken was born in North Vancouver and spent a good part of his working life as a courier with Purolator. Here he formed friendships that have lasted over 25 years. Ken also had an affinity for nice cars and driving fast. He enjoyed summer camping trips throughout BC with Jordan and his pets.
After his diagnosis in 2007, Ken moved to the island to be closer to his son and focus on his health. Here he met Jill Allen and Al & Anne Smith whose support companionship during his fight, through appointments, sailing or beach trips, coffee breaks, and dinners out meant the world to Ken.
Ken’s fight is something to be celebrated. He fought hard and his desire to live proved many doctors wrong over the almost 10 years since his diagnosis. Thank you to the staff at St. Joseph’s, Lionsgate, Nanaimo General and Royal Jubilee Hospitals, the Cumberland Dialysis Clinic, and Dr. Neufeld for helping keep Ken healthy throughout these years.
A special thanks to the amazing staff at Hospice at The Views; their care and compassion for Ken and the family made a difficult time more bearable.
At his request, there will be no formal service.
