Nov. 5, 1934 in Navan, Ont.- Jan. 29, 2017 in Courtenay, BC
Roland Lynn Irwin passed away at home on January 29, 2017. He was predeceased by his wife Heather Irwin, brothers: David Irwin, Lyall Irwin, and Marvin Irwin, sister: Meryl Irwin and his parents: David Campbell Irwin and Stella Farmer. He is survived by his daughters: Sheryl Irwin of Victoria, BC, and Meryl Irwin of Courtenay, BC, grandchildren: Bridey Harris, Maddie Harris, and Jake Harris and great grandchild: Charlotte Howe.
Lynn served in the Canadian Forces for 30 years, from 1954 to 1984. He was an Air Defence Technician and served on many bases across Canada and the US. When he retired in 1984, he joined the Corp of Commissioners. Lynn also belonged to the Evergreen Seniors Centre and Courtenay Legion. In his leisure time, Lynn loved to fish and walk in the forest. He loved Springer Spaniels and had many over the years (all named “Billy”). He played many sports, including hockey and curling. He was also a champion welter-weight boxer. He loved “Dad’s Cookies” and crossword puzzles. In later years, he loved watching sports on TV - especially CFL football (never NFL!), golf and of course, the Canucks.
Lynn loved his grandchildren, his great granddaughter and his daughters very much. He was very kind and generous. He had a great sense of humour and kept everyone laughing right up to the end. Lynn was knowledgeable and intelligent, always willing to share facts and information that he had memorized or picked up over the years. He was a cornucopia of miscellaneous facts and anecdotes, and enjoyed quizzing his grandchildren. Lynn was a shy, quiet man except when surrounded by family when he would love to entertain us with stories of his family and growing up in the Ottawa Valley and enlightening us with interesting facts about such diverse subjects as Astronomy, Meteorology, and the origin of proper names. He was an honourable man and was extremely honest and loyal. We will miss him very much.
