Beef to all the regressive bellyaching over 5th street. The narrowness is a visual illusion as the planted areas are equal to a car width, so no narrower than a standard urban street in most cities with cars parked on both sides. There are plenty of bike riders, including kids going to and from school. I live just off 5th and use the street daily. I’ve yet to see big transit buses or trucks crash into anything. Speeding has been reduced. As for bikes in the traffic lanes, you have to do that eastbound in order to make a left turn. We waited through some painful construction last summer and the elegant result was worth it, I’m proud of Courtenay’s main drag now, it’s beautiful.

Here’s a free driving lesson for the “gentleman” who tried to cut in front of me on Cliff Avenue around 12:15 on May 6. I did not see your vehicle until you came out of my blind spot. Your attempt to pass me on the right just before the end of the merge lane was reckless and dangerous. I was safely following the vehicle in front of me and was under no obligation to hit the brakes just so you could get one car length ahead of me. The Motor Vehicle Act clearly states that passing on the right is not permitted in BC except in specific situations – and then only when it is safe to do so. Learn the rules of the road before you shout profanities and wave your middle finger at other drivers. Tickets are expensive, accidents even worse!

A bouquet of muscles to Marc Mazz of Titanium Crossfit for opening up his gym and volunteering his time to the students of Lake Trail Middle School. The students really enjoyed the sessions you provided and it inspired a few of them to start working out on their own time. Thank you very much!

A gorgeous bouquet of thanks to the members of the Comox works crew. You do a fantastic job of looking after our public spaces. The trees and planters in downtown Comox are beautiful and welcoming. A belated thanks for the Cottonwood Greenway, which I enjoy every morning on my way to work. Your work is noticed and appreciated. Thank you.

A huge bouquet to the organizers of the Local Hero Awards, its sponsors, community partners, the Comox Fire Department, the Comox Valley Record and the awards crafted by Randy Frank. It was a lovely evening, very humbling and very much appreciated.

I live on Comox Avenue along with many others. Each year around this time some inconsiderate drivers decide that Comox Avenue is the international speedway of the Comox Valley. The intersection at Church Street and Comox Avenue has a four-way stop; and then any driver heading towards the Comox hill does not have to stop, slow down or even drive the speed limit until Anderton. Should this light be green it’s full on pedal to the metal! Don’t even have to change gears. With roaring motorcycle throttles and car mufflers that have not been serviced in years, some days I wonder if I am actually living on a speedway. These speedy motorcyclists and inconsiderate drivers are most apparent during the evening hours and continue each and every year to exert their unappreciated “roar of the engine.” The unticketed motorists, an excellent source of municipal revenue going untapped. Another example of nothing will happen until someone gets hurt?

I would like to thank Complete Auto Clinic in Comox for promptly fitting me in to check the wheels on my car after a friend switched my summer tires over. I was concerned that there was an issue and they made time for me that same day. They checked each nut on each tire, and then checked the air in all four tires. They were happy to tell me all was well. When I asked them how much I owed them I was told ‘nothing’! Wow - not only great service but they wouldn’t accept payment. This is the first time I have been to Complete Auto, but it certainly will not be the last time! Thank you!

My beef concerns lack of enforcement of the parking bylaws in dowmtown Comox. People seem to think that they can park where they wish with no regards for “No Parking” signs. They also do not seem to care if they block laneways or parking lot entrances. This rant refers to the area between Church Street and the optometrist clinic on Comox Avenue. This area in front of Scotiabank and Mary’s Market has signage that says “No Parking” with the appropriate arrows. Folks are either blind or do not care: they park there anyway. It happens quite often. They do not realize that they are blocking the thru-traffic lane and some drivers blow the horn to an empty vehicle. I have yet to see our bylaw enforcement officer come on scene and issue tickets to these drivers. I tried to call him last week and got the old “Leave a message and I’ll get back to you” spiel. Why do we have these bylaws if they are not going to be enforced to some degree? Whatever happened to the man who used to patrol the streets with his chalk stick and a pad of tickets? Get with it; enforce the parking bylaws or scrap them.
