Dear editor,I'm a supporter of private investment to create jobs and provide taxes for services that we all enjoy. The Raven coal mine project would provide many economic benefits. I have read the opponents' and supporters' letters, and checked out the Compliance Energy websites. What's the hurry? The upgrade of the E&N rail corridor will take years and many dollars.Compliance CEO John Tapics is unrealistic if he thinks coal trucks are acceptable on Highway 4. This narrow traffic corridor is overloaded already with essential Tofino tourist traffic. From my industrial experience, it is my view that it is highly probable to predict a company's future safety and environmental performance based on their past results. Compliance Energy apparently has no past experience as an underground coal miner — they are an unknown company. This leads to questioning the present government's consideration of the project. The project appears to be speculative, with many unknowns. It could be a good project for the future with a proven coal mining company with genuine interests in employees, the community and the environment.I would really like to see private investment in local resources and decent-paying private-sector jobs, but the Compliance Energy proposal has far too many unknowns.Phil Harrison,Comox
