A large contingent of Comox Valley Road Runners took a break from the road and participated in the annual Yeti Snowshoe Race on the top of Mount Washington on Saturday, Jan. 28.
With snowshoes strapped onto their running shoes the participants powered through blowing snow and cool temperatures. In true Yeti fashion, the undulating course was challenging, powdery, and did not disappoint even the most determined runner.
Running narrow trails through the trees kept racers alert looking for hazards and for opportunities to pass those who had gone out too quick. The long and steep climbs took their breath away but everyone left with a smile on their face.
The CVRR racers, sponsored by Extreme Runners, had teams in both the 10K and the 5K courses of this unique event. In the enduro (10K) Neil Holm (Extreme Runners/Asics) led the team, finishing second overall and 1st M4049. He was followed closely by Brad Crowe who was third overall and 1st M3039. Excellent performances were also turned in by Domonick Nadeau 2nd M0119, Marguerite Masson 1st F5059, Mary Bridges (Let’s Go! Run trainer) 1st F4049, John Ingram 1st M6069 and Cathy Clark 2nd F5059.
The sport course (5K) saw Marion Bryan 3rd F3039, Louis Nadeau 4th M4049, Stephen Turple 5th M4049, Sheila van Gisbergen 1st F6069, and Kiyoko Marton 11th F2029.
"The Comox Valley Road Runners wish to thank Extreme Runners for their sponsorship and for supporting the Comox Valley running community," a CVRR spokesperson said. "The next event on the road race calender is the Cedar 12Kk. Good luck to all of the participants."
