When it comes to a great game of women鈥檚 hockey, there are various challenges a team must overcome, but in the case of the Comox Valley Breakers game on Saturday, age and experience weren鈥檛 one of them.
Feb. 10 at Glacier Gardens in Comox, the Breakers and the Vancouver Island Women鈥檚 55-plus team met for a good old game of hockey. At times it can be difficult to fill a full roster for women鈥檚 games in the Valley. To overcome this challenge, the ladies played three periods of four-on-four.
The desire to play the game brings the women together, but it is their dedication to playing that keeps them coming back.
With great excitement, the Breakers witnessed Christine Moore stepping onto the ice for her first-ever game. She was surrounded by a network of supportive women playing with and against her. For the women who have been playing more than two decades, it鈥檚 wonderful to see more females taking up the sport. For novice players like Christine, it鈥檚 empowering to have veterans fostering her growth.
The final score of the game was 5-4 for the Breakers, with the winning goal scored by Emily Murray in the last minute of play.
The Breakers take on Port Alberni on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Glacier Gardens Arena. Puck drop is 9:15 p.m.
