Over-35 men's soccer team knocks off Campbell River

Tony Grover Cup game in Victoria up next for locals.

Despite a lack of substitute players or a goalkeeper, the Comox Valley over-35 men's soccer team defeated its nemesis 4-1 on a windy Saturday in Campbell River to wrap up regular season play.

Alan Fletcher headed in the winning goal off a pinpoint corner from fellow midfielder Ron Quilter. Strong defending continually thwarted the Campbell River attack that was limited mostly to long-range shooting.

Andrew Scott and Bruno Munger shared goaltending duties for the Comox Valley side that had lost two previous league meetings with Campbell River.

Earlier in January, the 35s had drawn 1-1 at home with the league leaders from Powell River, against whom they had lost their season opener. The Comox Valley squad also drew 3-3 with Qualicum, last season's league winner.

Next up is a Tony Grover Cup playoff game Feb. 12 in Victoria against the Vantreights A team.
