Vanier celebrates best in athletics

The past year was a banner year for Vanier Secondaryathletes and teams, which were recognized at the school’s annual Celebration of Excellence. Leading the charge was the senior girls rugby team, which repeated as AA provincial champions XVs.

The past year was a banner year for Vanier Secondaryathletes and teams, which were recognized at the school’s annual Celebration of Excellence. Leading the charge was the senior girls rugby team, which repeated as AA provincial champions XVs.

Other team and individual provincial highlights included:

•junior girls rugby – 6th at Junior 7s Championship

•senior boys rugby – 7th at AAA Tier II XVs Championship

•Swimming Provincial Championships – Abby McDowell, 7th 50m Freestyle, 8th 100m Individual Medley

•Wrestling Provincial Championships – AJ Julien, 6th boys 84kg

•Gymnastics Provincial Championships:– Jada McGregor, Grade 10, gold medal in uneven bars, silver in all-around competition for senior girls; Brooke Berg, Grade 9, bronze in junior girls vault; Paige Thexton, Grade 9, silvers in floor routine, and all-around for junior girls

Mountain Biking Provincial Championships: Zachary Rebitt, Grade 8 Boys, 6th XC, third Enduro and fifth overall; Cole Stinson, Grade 9 boys, 10th XC, 6th Enduro and ninth overall; Zach Loveless, senior boys, eighth XC, sixth Enduro and 10th overall

Senior Boys Basketball Championships – 9th at AAA Provincials (first at Island Championships)

Senior Girls Basketball Provincial Championships – 12th at AA Provincials

Grade 9 Boys Basketball Provincial Championships – 16th at Provincials (first at Island Championships)

Track and Field Provincial Championships: Ema Bowie, sixth in 100m girls Grade 8 final; Owen Flynn, 8th in 400m hurdles senior boys final; Alexander Julien, 7th in senior boys javelin and 10th in shot put

All Around Athletes who excelled in multiple sports:

Grade 8: Sophia Julien and Zachary Rebitt

Grade 9: Frances Nye and Emmett Allan

Junior: Cali McKay, Abby McDowell and Shamus Harrison
