On Monday, Oct. 16, Salena Helmreich will be the guest speaker at the Comox Valley Horticultural Society meeting.

Helmreich will talk about pollination and pollinator, particularly from wild bees.

Helmreich grew up in southern Maine and graduated from Wheaton College in Massachusetts with a B.A. in biology. She worked as a pollinator research technician for conservation and restoration labs. Helmreich spent two years working as a field biologist in Denmark before starting her Ph.D. at Washington State University. Her research focuses on wild bee contributions to pollination in northern highbush blueberries in eastern and western Washington. Helmreich is interested in what surrounding landscapes can tell us about how wild bees interact with crops.

There are two options for attendance. The in-person meeting will take place the conference hall in the Florence Filberg Centre in Courtenay. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 7:15 p.m.

To join via Zoom, advanced registration is required for both members and non-members. Current members will receive a separate Zoom invitation. Registration for non-members ($5.50) is very simple – visit by 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, as it requires two days to process.
