With the last of the 1,298 Christmas parcels of hope delivered, Everybody Deserves a Smile founder Chantal Stefan could finally take a well-deserved break.

The cold front bringing record low temperatures to the Island this week has prompted the Comox Valley Regional District to activate an Extreme Weather Warming Centre at the CVRD’s Civic Room located at 770 Harmston Ave in Courtenay. This centre is preparing to be activated for four nights from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. from Dec. 26 - 29, based on a forecasted drop in temperature. The centre will be staffed with the appropriate personnel to ensure all proper safety precautions are adhered to.

Neither COVID, nor snow, not even a major power outage could stop the team of volunteers from preparing and delivering a record 720 meals to homes across the Comox Valley - the most ever served in the 40 years of the Earl Naswell Community Christmas Dinner.

Those seeking relief in downtown Courtenay now have another option available following the installation of a new public washroom on the corner of 6th Street and England Avenue that opens on Friday, Dec. 24.

Currently, the ministry has about 60 children and youth in care in this area

The Town of Comox and the Comox Community Centre have made the decision to take the 45th annual Polar Bear Swim virtual for 2021. The decision to cancel the organized, in-person event was difficult, but with community safety being most important, it was best to relaunch it as an individual and family event.
