The Forgotten Dreams is a new live art and music collaboration from Josh Klassen and Nate Schmold, coming to Artful: The Gallery on Aug. 30.
The night plans to showcase a melding of live painting, performance and music into one experience.
Klassen and Schmold’s creative partnership blends decades of individual practice across painting, street art, illustration, music, and digital media. Klassen’s work is rooted in community projects, murals, and the energy of grassroots creation, while Schmold’s multidisciplinary approach spans visual art, theatre, music, and game design, often exploring abstraction and surreality juxtaposed with deeply human themes like mental health and emotional expression.
Together, they collaborate as CIRCLE⭕️ COMPLEX, an experimental music project that transforms live improvisation into layered, rhythmic soundscapes. Their visual collaborations merge evolving organic forms with bold, cartoon infused street-art.
The Forgotten Dreams will transform the gallery into a living studio. The walls will be lined with fragments from each artist’s history—paintings, drawings, and artifacts that converge toward a central focal point: a large blank canvas to be completed live during the event. Throughout the evening, Klassen and Schmold will alternate between collaborative painting on the canvas with
live improvised music accompaniment by the two artists, building a shared work that reflects both their histories.
The night will conclude with a CIRCLE⭕️ COMPLEX performance, uniting their visual and sonic work into a hypnotic, improvisational finale.
Doors at Artful: The Gallery (526 C Cumberland Road, Courtenay) open at 6:00 p.m. and tickets are $20.
