Come 'Out in the Park' this summer for queer film festival

"There's a community out there for everybody," Wo says. "Even if we have to do the leg work to get it going. Come on out, enjoy some films and meet some new people."

Out in the Park is a bi-weekly queer film festival being held in the Comox Valley this summer

Every couple of weeks this summer, people will be coming to Lewis Park to watch a piece of Queer Cinema.

That's the idea behind Out in the Park, a new film series started by David Wo.

"I thought it would be nice to broaden my community and introduce folks to some films," he said. "Over the winter, I was introduced to (the film) Querelle and it just blew my mind that there was a whole, full-length art film with these queer themes. It was like a high-budget, legitimate film ... So I reached out to my peers and asked what else I was missing."

Wo got an extensive list of films, and spent the winter watching through the list.

"It kind of inspired me," he said. "We should do these out in the park ... and the idea of broadening my social sphere and my queer network is kind of a driving force for it as well."

And so, Out in the Park was born.

How it works is every two weeks on Saturdays, people gather at Lewis Park at around sunset. They bring blankets, chairs and whatever else they need to be comfortable and watch the film choice for that week. Wo is hoping it will be an unforgettable summer and turn into a bigger, annual event.

The schedule is:

June 14, But I'm a Cheerleader - 9:30 p.m.

June 28, Orlando - 9:30 p.m.

July 12, Paris is Burning - 9:30 p.m.

July 26, Querelle - 9:11 p.m.

Aug. 9, The Hunger - 8:50 p.m.

Aug. 23, Every Body, 8:30 p.m.

Sept. 6, Pride, 8:00 p.m.

"There's a community out there for everybody," Wo says. "Even if we have to do the leg work to get it going. Come on out, enjoy some films and meet some new people."
