Courtenay Canada Day celebrations bring the community together

Courtenay Canada Day celebrations are just around the corner, with  free, family-friendly events happening on Monday, June 30, and Tuesday, July 1, in Downtown  Courtenay and Lewis Park. 

The festivities begin with the Night Before concert at Lewis Park on Monday, June 30, running from 4:15 p.m. to around 10 p.m. The evening kicks off with Indigenous and multicultural performances, followed by The English Brothers, a high-energy duo known for their mix of folk, country and classic rock.  Headlining the concert is Jeff Plankenhorn, an acclaimed singer-songwriter and slide guitar player  whose roots rock and Americana style has earned international recognition. 

On Tuesday, July 1, the day starts in Downtown Courtenay with the 5th Street Mile at 9:30 a.m., a fun run  organized by the Comox Valley Road Runners. The Canada Day parade follows at 10 a.m. down 5th Street, featuring floats, music and community groups. 

The fun continues at Lewis Park from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with activities for all ages, including a kid’s’ zone, food trucks, vendors, activity booths, welcoming ceremonies and cake. The popular children’s bike draw for ages five to 12 also returns, with tickets available at the special events tent beside the Lewis Park stage. 

Live music at the Lewis Park stage begins with Nathan Senner at 11 a.m., a local singer-songwriter  known for his acoustic style and heartfelt lyrics. The Big Easy Funk Ensemble headlines the afternoon  with a performance from 1p.m. to 2:30 p.m., bringing high-energy New Orleans-style funk, jazz and soul to  the stage. 

Other Canada Day activities include a free swim at the Courtenay Outdoor Pool, an open house at the  Courtenay and District Museum, and the Evergreen Club Tea Dance at the Native Sons Hall.
