Remembrance Day 2020 will be like no other in living memory. Normally, crowds of people gather at Jubilee Square in downtown Courtenay in honour of the fallen and all those who have served Canada overseas and at home. This year, as we all do our part to prevent the spread of COVID-19, a large community gathering isn’t possible.

Since the first commemoration in 1919, each November 11th, Canadians pay tribute to those members of the Armed Forces and civilians who have sacrificed and lost their lives in times of war.

For more than a century, Canadians have gathered on Remembrance Day at local cenotaphs, town squares or Canadian Legion Branches. This year is different. Although we may be unable to gather together in the same way to honour those who have been lost in their service to our nation, it is more important than ever that each of us, wherever we are, remember their sacrifice at 11 a.m. on November 11th.
