To the Editor,

I strongly support the 6th Street Active Transportation Bridge in Courtenay.

We don’t have to choose between affordable housing and infrastructure — they both matter. The current 5th Street Bridge forces cyclists to dismount, making it unsafe and inconvenient. The new bridge will improve safety, accessibility, and attract residents and visitors, helping revitalize our struggling downtown.

I commend Mayor Bob Wells and the Council for their forward-thinking approach. To enhance connectivity further, I suggest making 5th Street a two-lane, one-way road eastbound toward the 5th Street Bridge with a wide, pedestrian-friendly sidewalk similar to Berkeley’s Telegraph Avenue.

This bridge is an investment in Courtenay’s future that will create jobs, boost the local economy, and build a healthier, more vibrant community. Let’s not delay progress.

Sincerely,
Nathan Wootten
