Dear Editor,
As Canadians, we take pride in our parliamentary democracy — a system that has stood the test of time and reflects the values of fairness and representation.
However, during election periods, the very essence of this democracy is undermined by acts of vandalism against party signs and threats of violence that have forced the cancellation of rallies. These actions harm the very integrity of our democratic process.
No one wins when elections are marred by hostility. Instead of fostering division, we must embrace the strength of our parliamentary system, which offers a diverse range of political parties to choose from. This diversity allows each of us to find a party that aligns closely with our values and aspirations, ensuring that every voice has the opportunity to be heard.
It is equally important to respect the new members of parliament who are elected fairly through this democratic process. These individuals represent the will of the people and carry the responsibility of shaping our nation's future. By supporting them and engaging constructively, we honour the principles of democracy and strengthen the foundation of our parliamentary government.
Canada’s rich history of democratic policy is a testament to the resilience and wisdom of its people. Let us honour this legacy by promoting respect during elections. By engaging in constructive dialogue and supporting peaceful campaigns, we can uphold the principles that make our democracy great.
It is time to move forward together, recognizing that our differences are what make us stronger. Let us protect the integrity of our elections and ensure that Canada remains a beacon of democratic values for generations to come.
