Dear Editor,
Last week I was parked outside the library for a while and noticed a young woman pushing her loaded grocery cart with what probably constituted all she owned in life. She was clothed in an assortment of skirts and leggings and jackets of many colours and designs. However, while her appearance was interesting, what tugged at my heart was her obvious mental health challenges.
I have no training in mental issues but it was very evident that she was completely detached from her surroundings and the real world, oblivious to traffic and other pedestrians going by and in need of some help.
How can our society ignore so many who desperately need professional care and treatment in government care and treatment facilities? How can we who have so much not ensure that everyone is safe and cared for, whatever their struggles?
Drug abuse is a completely different issue that seems to evade resolution. Those who are afflicted by mental illness didn’t decide to go down that road.
