LETTER: Maybe we need to return to hospital care for the unhoused

Homes for those with mental health issues were closed, leaving residents to fend for themselves on the street

Concerning the letter from D. Turner re: helping the unhoused. I remember many years ago when the homes for the mentally unstable were closed and the poor residents were turned out onto the streets with no help.

I lived in Alberta at that time and places like the Mitchener Centre in Red Deer and the Ponoka Hospital were closed and the people turned out onto the streets to, supposedly, be watched over by social workers.

We now see the results of that scheme when we look to the streets and see the people that D. Turner is referring to. Maybe it is past time to rethink that strategy and re-open these facilities to offer care to the community that needs help. Just saying.
