Suspect in custody following assault in Courtenay

Police have arrested a man after a serious assault was reported in Courtenay on August 10, 2025. 

At about 11:35 a.m., Comox Valley RCMP received a 911-call in which a woman was heard screaming about her husband being attacked near Lewis Park in Courtenay. 

Police responded right away and located an elderly man on the ground, bleeding heavily from his face. A witness identified the suspect who was standing a short distance away and he was taken into custody. 

“This was a senseless attack on a vulnerable member of our community,” said Inspector Scott Mercer, Officer in Charge of the Comox Valley RCMP. “We are grateful to witnesses who stepped forward to help and to those who provided critical information that led to the quick arrest of the suspect.”

45-year-old Melvin Teagai, who is known to police, has been charged with aggravated assault and robbery. He remains in custody pending his next court appearance. 

The victim sustained significant injuries, although not considered to be life-threatening. Victim Services has been engaged to provide support, and he is expected to recover.
