The green was alive with energy this past weekend as the annual Ramsay, Lampman, Rhodes Lawyers Lawn Bowling Tournament took place in Nanaimo on May 24 and 25.
Under warmer skies and fierce competition, the event showcased some of Vancouver Island’s finest talent — and delivered a thrilling finish.
Vern Greenhill, a seasoned competitor and former Canadian national champion, led his team to first place alongside Henri Saucier and Shelley Howieson. This marks Greenhill’s third consecutive win at the tournament, though he played with new teammates this year.
Trailing in the final end, the championship came down to the very last bowl. In a dramatic close, Greenhill delivered a perfectly placed shot that sealed the victory, a moment that drew cheers from the crowd.
Second place went to the team of Brian Scherr, Glen Greenhill, and Cindy Greenhill. Scherr, serving as skip, made a standout play in his final match by hitting the jack and following it into the ditch — where it remained live — adding to the winning score. Though proud of their strong showing, Glen Greenhill experienced mixed emotions cheering for his brother Vern, knowing that if Vern's team had lost, Glen’s would have taken the top prize.
Fourth place was secured by Dean Penny, Shelley McCollum, and Brandy Knight, a new addition to the tournament scene. Brandy, a Special Olympian in basketball and a standout athlete from the BC Games, brought infectious enthusiasm and team spirit to the green.
Eighth place went to another Courtenay-based team consisting of Hal Gray, Sandi Mitchell, and Pete Harding. The team brought strong sportsmanship and camaraderie to the competition.
The Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club would like to thank Ramsay, Lampman, Rhodes Lawyers, APH Solutions Canada Inc., Kerri Major (TD Financial Wealth Planning), Lucie Wood, and North Island Dental for their generous support.
With May already brimming with competitive highlights, this tournament has set a high bar for the season ahead. Congratulations to all competitors and organizers for a well-run and memorable event!
