Seven students from the Courtenay-based Academy of Martial Arts competed in a Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition, Aug. 17 in Richmond. The Jiu-Jitsu Ohana III was held at the Richmond Olympic Oval. It featured single elimination format for adults and masters, and double elimination for kids and juvenile.

Robbie Thompson was forced to withdraw from his swimming race Wednesday at the World Transplant Games in Newcastle because he came down with a chest cold. The 21-year-old Courtenay athlete had planned to compete in the 50-metre freestyle event.
